A Week in Luther's Steps

Invite all churches in your area to honor the 500th Reformation Jubilee with a tour of the Luther Sites! This sample itinerary covers all important places of the Lutheran Reformation in a one week program. Like all itins on our website it is just a sample which can be shortened and extended in any way. We can add a tour of Bavaria, a River Cruise on Elbe or Danube, visits with a partner congregation, or anything else. But maybe this is a good start:

Day 1 - Arrival Berlin
Your group arrives in Berlin and will be welcomed by your Terra Lu Travel companion and the de luxe motor coach. Transfer to the hotel for a free afternoon. Time to rest and to get over the jet lag. In the evening you will enjoy a welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Berlin - Wittenberg
A full day of sightseeing is planned for today in the German capital. We'll see the famous sites, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, and remnants of the Berlin Wall. In the late afternoon we'll depart Berlin and drive to Wittenberg for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 - Wittenberg
This morning we'll visit sites in Wittenberg, the city of the Lutheran reformation, including the Stadtkirche, the University, and the All Saints Castle Church where Luther nailed his 95 Theses on the door. The afternoon gives you enough time to visit the Luther House, the World's largest museum on Reformation history, or one of the many other museums and exhibitions - using the Terra Lu Wittenberg Coupons™ for free admission. Or try the ice cream in one of the many cafés and enjoy the Reformation atmosphere.

Day 4 - Leipzig - Eisleben - Mansfeld
We start this morning with a visit in Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach was the cantor at St Thomas Church and composed most if his cantatas here. Leipzig also became famous in the the time of the 1989 revolution in East Germany, 25 years ago.
Then we continue to Eisleben, where Luther was born and died (in 1483 and 1546). We'll see the churches where Luther was baptized, and where he preached his last sermon, as well as the house of birth, and the Luther Monument. It was in Mansfeld, nearby, where Luther spent his early years. Return to Eisleben for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 - Buchenwald - Erfurt
Today we get in contact with the darkest part of German history as we visit Buchenwald, a former Nazi concentration camp.
In the afternoon we arrive in Erfurt. On our orientation walk through the nicely restored old center we visit St. Mary's Cathedral, the Merchant's bridge, the historic university Martin Luther attended, and the Augustinian monastery where he lived as a monk. Dinner tonight will be in a rustic restaurant in "medieval style".

Day 6 - Erfurt - Coburg - Erfurt
Today we cross the Thuringian Forest for a day excursion to Coburg. Martin Luther lived at Veste Coburg Fortress while his fellow Philipp Melanchthon proclaimed the Augsburg Confession at the imperial diet in Augsburg. The Veste Coburg houses the Bavarian art treasuries.
Back to Erfurt you can enjoy some time for shopping or strolls through the nice town.

Day 7 - Erfurt - Eisenach - Wartburg Castle - Frankfurt
We continue west this morning to Eisenach to see the impressive Wartburg Castle. It is here that Luther hid in 1521 and 1522, taking on the assumed name of Knight George, after being placed under an imperial ban. While here he translated the New Testament into German. Down the hill in the little town of Eisenach we visit the House where composer Johann Sebastian Bach was born. We'll enjoy an introduction into Bach's life and work with a music demonstration on historic music instruments.
We continue to Frankfurt in the afternoon where we'll overnight and enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 8 - Frankfurt to USA.
This morning we transfer to Frankfurt airport where we board our return flight back home.
