GrimmHeimat and the
German Fairy Tale Route

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm have attained world fame due to their collections of "Children's and Household Tales". Follow their traces through romantic forests, wild landscapes, and picturesque little towns with timber framed facades. And get to know the home of "Little Red Riding Hood", "Sleeping Beauty", "Hänsel and Gretel", and many more.

The first stop of your journey in the steps of the Grimm Brothers is Hanau and nearby Steinau. Here the famous collectors of fairy tales spent their early childhood. Immerse yourself in the time of the Grimm's and see the important places where they grew up. You'll see the buildings where the family lived, the school buildings of the children and the St. Catherine's Church, where the grandfather preached. The Brothers-Grimm-House in the old administration building gives you a good insight into the life, work and influence of the Brothers Grimm before you visit the Steinau castle.

In the years 1802 and 1803 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm took up the study of law in the university town of Marburg. Let us invite you to explore the city and look for stairs, houses and walls of the "Grimm-Dich-Pfad", to discover the famous characters from Grimm's fairy tales and to climb the city. From Marburg castle you'll have a wonderful view over the Lahn valley. Here the landscapist and graphic artist Otto Ubbelohde, who became famous for his illustrations of Grimm's Fairy Tales, lived and worked in a beautiful half-timbered house. Today the great work of the artist is presented here in a little museum.

Following the German Fairy Tale Route your journey takes you to Frankenberg, the city of the ten towers. You will visit Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in Bergfreiheit before arriving at and in the fairytale-like town of Homberg (Efze), the hometown of "Little Brother And Little Sister." Also Terra Lu Travel is based here.

For many years Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm lived in Kassel and collected fairy tales. The city guide will show you what achievement the Grimm Brothers have also provided in the field of language and literature, and explains why the famous "Children's and Household Tales" (published in 1812) were declared a World Documentary Heritage by UNESCO.

The main place to see in Kassel is the wonderful exhibition about the Grimm's life and work in the new GRIMMWELT. This 2015' opened, brand new facility is a unique museum, devoted to the Brothers Grimm. Located in a prominent spot in the city on an area of around 4,000 square meters, the new museum features many interactive elements as well as numerous original exhibits.

Your way continues through "Reinhardswald" forest to Sababurg, the Castle of Sleeping Beauty. Your guide gives you an insight into the life at court, and you'll become acquainted with the local mythology. In the afternoon you travel to Trendelburg with the famous Rapunzel tower and enjoy your fabulous dinner at the castle.

The next stop is in Hamelin, the town of the Pied Piper. You will follow the Pied Piper on a tour through this picturesque town and hear about the history of the 765 year old legend which appears not just in the fairy tale collection of the Brothers Grimm but also in the writings of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Robert Browning. No doubt that you will enjoy the "Rats" musical, performed open-air by the citizen of Hamelin.

The German Museum for Fairy Tales will be another stop as you travel north bound along the Weser River.

The final stop along the German Fairy Tale Road is Bremen, home of the Town Musicians. The rich facades and imposing architecture reflects the wealth this town already had in the 16th century from global trade. And of course your group will take a group picture with the Town Musicians in front of the gothic town hall. The farewell dinner tonight will be in the Ratskeller, the 600 year old restaurant in the historic town hall (another UNESCO World Heritage Site).
